Quinton de Kock made a return to international cricket as AB de Villiers chose to bat despite being wary about early morning conditions that the returning Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel could have made use of. The premier pace pack had to wait to get their first outing on the tour as de Villiers decided to defend sans an allrounder at No. 7 and with only one specialist spinner - South Africa 

went into the match with Farhaan Behardien to come in at No. 7 instead of Chris Morris, their only seam bowling allrounder, while Imran Tahir and JP Duminy would share slower-bowling duties.

India played Ajinkya Rahane - and are likely to install him at No. 4 to lengthen their batting line-up - and also included legspinner Amit Mishra in the XI. That gave them just two seam options in Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Umesh Yadav with two spinners and the allrounder, Stuart Binny.
